Background
Our bodies respond to inflammation and tissue damage by producing molecules called specialized Pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) which help resolve inflammation and promote tissue repair. SPMs are an integral part of resolving inflammation and helping restore normal functions of inflamed tissues and cells. However, factors such as diet, lifestyle, and excess body fat can affect adequate production of these important molecules which further highlights the need for supplementation from exogenous sources.
What SPM Active offers
This product offers 1g of SPMs that are extracted from high quality marine oil through a patented process called fractionation. After vigorous testing, fractions high in SPMs are selected and tested to ensure their safety and their efficacy in pro-resolving activity.
Similar to other Metagenics products, costumers are able to enter the lot number of their product in the following website and examine the level of toxins and pollutants contained in that specific batch. To ensure the highest level of care and quality, all product testing is facilitated through independent third party laboratories.
Why SPM Active
Metagenics was the first company to market and deliver SPMs as a supplement in North America and this product is the more concentrated and improved formulation of the original. In 2 separate case studies, athletes were supplemented with SPM active and asked to self-report their mood and level of fatigue and pain. Following daily intakes of SPMs for 8 weeks, participants showed the following changes: significant decrease in pain levels immediately and 24 hours after workouts; increase in emotional wellbeing score measured in categories such as depression, tension and confusion; significant decrease in fatigue and stress and bodily discomfort. Additionally, due to their role in immune response mitigation in the resolution phase of stress or injury to tissues and cells, this product is ideal for people with inflammatory diseases or unresolved injuries.
To summarize, previous research has shown SPMs to be beneficial in the following ways: reducing inflammation which can be helpful in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and cardiovascular disease; promoting tissue regeneration and repair by activating stem cells and promoting angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels); enhancing immune function by promoting bacterial clearance and increasing lymphocyte (type of white blood cell) function.
